Aurora Borealis

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed (Matthew 2:9-10, NIV).

The Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, made an appearance in places further south this year due to the presence of solar storms. On Friday night, the best moments of viewing passed quickly, so I was left scrolling online to see the lights via pictures.

Several meteorologists reported there would be another opportunity the next evening to view the Northern Lights. On babysitting duty for my nieces and nephew, we piled into my Dad’s truck to hit up several spots where we could look North and wait for the amazing light display.

After driving to two locations and waiting for the lights to appear, the kids got restless. We were all tired, and decided to turn in for the night. Though I didn’t capture a picture of the beautiful colors that showed up the evening before, I did snap the photo included with this post.

As I stared at the photo, my mind was drawn to the story of the three kings in the Gospel of Matthew. Can you imagine being the three kings, called by King Herod to go with a couple buddies to find the Messiah just by following a star in the sky? Amazing, but also scary.

Made me reflect on my own life a little bit. Who or what am I listening to, and where am I looking to guide me on my path? If I want to be like the three Kings, I must learn to look up to Jesus.

Matthew 2:9-10 says: “After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.”

How willing are we to go where Jesus calls us, despite what it might cost us? We might be tired, we might be called into the unknown with very little information, but we have a choice to make. Do we listen, look up, and choose to trust Jesus, or do we decide to look outward and listen to where society leads up?

Just like that Saturday night, we may show up, and things don’t turn out as planned. But anything with Jesus is better than everything without Him. Spend some time today and ask yourself the question: What is my North star?

Are you allowing your life to be guided by your work? Are you allowing your life to be guided by greed and a desire for more? Are you allowing your life to be guided by keeping up appearances?

Look to Jesus, and trust that He is always guiding us exactly where we are supposed to be.
