By Design

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27, NIV).

I’ve never considered myself a creative person. When it comes to all things arts and crafts, my efforts have always been in vain. Hilariously, I won an arts and crafts contest in elementary school. Little did the judges know, my cousin, Jenna, pretty much did all the work for me!

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that creativity comes in many forms. Writing is a creative process. What I do as a physical therapist requires creative thinking every day. If you’re like me and have discredited yourself for a long time, take a few minutes to think about where creativity shows up in your life.

If you flip open the very first page of your Bible, you’ll see that we serve the Creator of the Universe. Genesis 1 is devoted to describing how God created the Earth and all that is in it. Sparknotes summarizes it this way:

“The Book of Genesis opens the Hebrew Bible with the story of creation. God, a spirit hovering over an empty, watery void, creates the world by speaking into the darkness and calling into being light, sky, land, vegetation, and living creatures over the course of six days1.”

If you flip to Genesis 1:27 you will read: So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God is the author and creator of everything. Since the beginning of time, He has been, by design, creating each of us with purpose, and for a purpose–to know God, and make Him known.

What are the gifts, talents, and skills that God has equipped you with to serve the purpose of bringing glory to His name? I want to encourage you today to spend some time thinking about that.

Don’t fall into the trap, as I used to do, of believing that you aren’t creative. Without realizing it, I was discrediting the God of the Universe.

Though you may not be an “artist” in the true societal sense of the word, each of us was knit together by design. God is the Ultimate Creator. None of His children are without specific skills that are intended to be used for our good, and His glory.

Ask the Lord to show you how you might lean into those gifts and talents. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and offer them to others in order to honor and glorify God.
