Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19, NIV).
My Dad loves going to yard sales during the summer. One of my favorite things is getting the opportunity to sort through what he buys and then do some research to determine the age, value, and function. Recently, he made it home with a small, vintage telescope.
Immediately, I searched Google to try to find this specific one. As I was reading more about telescopes, one bit of information stuck with me.Telescopes collect and magnify the light from distant objects1. They’re used to draw large, distant objects into focus, particularly when looking at the night sky. This made me ponder: What is it that others are drawing into focus when they look at me, even from a distance?
One of my favorite scriptures is Matthew 28:19: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. One of our responsibilities as sons and daughters of the One True King is that when others see us, they are getting a glimpse of Jesus. Often, the best form of preaching is one without words. When others see me, I want it to feel as though they are looking at me through the lens of a telescope. Specifically, a telescope that magnifies the light of Christ.
A song by Cody Carnes titled “Christ Be Magnified” 2 has a chorus that goes like this:
Oh! Christ be magnified Let His praise arise Christ be magnified in me Oh! Christ be magnified From the altar of my life Christ be magnified in me
When we choose to display kindness, love, and joy, the character of the Lord is drawn into focus. When others see this, they see Jesus, even at a time when they are unable to recognize it as such. As followers of Jesus, we have the opportunity every day to allow the light of Christ to be magnified through our actions. And so, my prayer today is this:
Lord, may I let Jesus be the light in my life, and may Christ be magnified in me.
