Divine Detour

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Philippians 4:12, NIV).
I was recently invited to join a group of ladies for a couple days at the lake. Although I couldn’t go for the entire week, I excitedly accepted the invite!
The drive was simple, but after getting off the interstate I found myself checking out all of my surroundings and missed the first turn toward the marina. Instead of looping back around, I continued up the road a bit and Google maps led me to a cut through that would connect me back to my original turn.
Although the detour only added a few extra minutes to my drive time, it was a time of perspective. Many of the homes were in very rough shape. From the looks of things on the outside, life for many of those folks was not one of ease, convenience or luxury.
As I continued to drive, I spent a few moments thinking about my life, my needs, and how the Lord has provided.
I have a beautiful home that, although it doesn’t afford me the green space I had growing up, is perfect for my needs right now.
I have a paid off vehicle that, although the air conditioning has been finicky lately, allows me to get to and from work, visit with family, and go where I want to go.
I have a closet full of clothes that, although small because of my old home, affords me the ability to dress for any occasion.
I have legs that carry me up the steps to my loft where, although the HVAC isn’t fully functioning, I have space to do a workout or watch a movie.
The human condition is one that lends itself to discontentment. But Paul writes in Philippians 4 about contentment in Christ when he says in verse 12: “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”
Paul wrote Phippians from prison. Talk about perspective. Contentment in Christ is joy despite our circumstances. May we all take some time today to express gratitude.
To quote a recent sermon from my local pastor, “Jesus + nothing = everything.” Whether we feel empty or have excess, we have everything we need in Jesus. Cling to that perspective today.
