Ducks Fly Together

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend (Proverbs 17:17, NLT).
If you’ve never seen the 90s movie, The Mighty Ducks, you should do yourself a favor and watch it this weekend. It’s a classic. One of the most famous lines in the movie was the inspiration for the title of this post: Ducks fly together.
During a pivotal point in the movie, the players on the Mighty Ducks aligned themselves in a V formation that allowed them to attack the opponent in order to score a game-tying goal. It wasn’t their skill that allowed them to be successful in this instance. Rather, it was about their formation and how they chose to fly forward, together. Ducks fly together.
Ducks actually do fly in a V formation. It’s easy to spot them in the sky! By doing this they are able to take turns flying in the front, which allows them to conserve energy and essentially they are able to get further, faster. I want to be like a duck and fly in a V formation, too.
Life is hard. So many of us are walking through challenges at this very moment: health crises, financial hardships, grief from losing a loved one, relationship stress, and so much more. But we can’t allow those things to keep us grounded when the Lord is calling us to fly into all the things He has planned for our life.
I remember feeling this way myself several years ago. I knew the Lord was calling me out, but I was afraid of taking off. Not because I didn’t trust Jesus, but because I didn’t want to do what He was asking at the time. If I wanted to go where He wanted to take me, the weight of my cargo was just too much. I had to make a difficult choice, which was to leave someone that I loved on the ground.
Sometimes in life we have to make difficult decisions. We might have to walk away from a difficult or toxic relationship. Maybe we have to set a boundary with someone we love that might feel harsh, but is designed to help protect us as we walk, and eventually fly, with Jesus.
I want to encourage you today to think about the cargo you’re carrying around. Ask yourself if there’s something that may be keeping you grounded when the Lord wants you to fly. You may have to walk away from a relationship, a job, change your spending habits, adjust to a new normal without a loved one, or any other number of things. Though I don’t know what burdens you’re carrying, I know that Jesus want you to lay them at His feet and allow Him to take you to new heights.
When we are willing to have the courage to take flight with the Lord, we must surround ourselves with folks who can be in our V formation. This gives us the ability to go faster and farther with Jesus than we ever would alone. Proverbs 17:17 is a popular verse that applies here: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Surround yourself with people who are like-minded, know your heart, have a relationship with Jesus and will always point you to Him. Allow those folks to have a spot in your V formation as you continue to fly forward into all that God has for you.
