A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12, NLT).
I was blessed with the opportunity to attend a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) conference at the end of February. “Realtime” is a time of faith, fellowship, and fun. This year there were over 2,500 attendees!
We worshiped with Cain and Life Church Worship. Our event emcee was Sage Steele. We heard messages from Tony Evans. Tony Dungy shared stories from his time as an NFL coach. We heard testimonies from NBA star Jonathan Issac, and college softball phenom Grace Turk.
It was an amazing 3 days spent reflecting on all the Lord has done through FCA over the last 70 years while also looking forward to what He will continue to do through this ministry.
When I arrived at the conference, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Because I serve in a somewhat limited role with FCA, I feel like I often miss out on the ability to forge relationships within the ministry, and I actually found myself feeling a little out of place.
God had more for me at Realtime than I imagined. While the slogan of “Faith, Fellowship, and Fun” held true, one word not found in the tagline that was mentioned a lot throughout the weekend was family.
Admittedly, I was somewhat skeptical that it would really feel like family to me. But God.
Realtime ended after just a few short days, but I walked away with a changed heart, and some new relationships that, even after a short time, felt like family and left a mark on my heart.
We are planning visits. We are connecting in prayer. We are supporting one another in the ministry of FCA as we prayerfully disciple youth within our respective communities.
Ecclesiastes 4:12, though often used as a marriage vow, is applicable in a much broader sense. When we intentionally step into a situation where we are carrying out a call of God on our lives, we must remember this truth: “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”
Connecting with others who share similar passions, but most importantly, who stand on the foundation of Jesus Christ, strengthens us like a triple braided cord that is not easily broken.
The relationships that deepened during my time at the FCA conference have already served to strengthen my heart as I continue to pursue Christ and the plan He has for my life.
Whatever God has called you to do, surround yourself with believers who support, pray for, and strengthen you in the same way these friends, who’ve become like family, have done for me.
