He Always Provides

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (Psalm 23:5, NIV).

I’ve always been pretty healthy, but since a diagnosis of endometriosis in 2018 I have to take medicine every morning. You’d think my brain would be wired to remember by now, but if I’m out of a normal routine, I sometimes forget. I keep an alarm set on my phone as a safety net.

Most Friday mornings I try to get some writing done, and it’s often on these days that I forget. When my alarm sounds, it’s a reminder to take the medicine when I get back to my vehicle.

One morning a few weeks back this very thing happened when the alarm I reset to remind me started going off. The problem was, I had nothing to take it with. No coffee, no water, nothing. Remembering that I had put my water bottle in the backseat, I safely reached behind me to grab it. When I picked it up, I knew it felt empty.

Knowing I didn’t want to forget, I opened the water bottle to find there was literally enough left in the bottle for one sip. I can take pills pretty well (something I still remember my Mammaw teaching me), and often don’t need a lot of water.

Might seem simple, but I remember saying aloud, “Thank you, Jesus.” There wasn’t much left, but it was enough to get the job done. It was all I needed. Have you ever felt like you’re down to the last drop, and you aren’t sure if it’s enough to get the job done?

Your last drop of energy. Your last drop of patience. Your last drop of kindness.

I think a lot of us feel this way more often than we might like to admit. Life can be demanding. Many of us are guilty of walking through our daily routine trying to pour from an empty cup. And if our cup isn’t completely empty, we’re sometimes down to the last drop.

Thankfully, the Lord reminded me that day the He always provides, even when I don’t come prepared, or I’m down to my last drop. He doesn’t want us to live our lives that way, though.

He reminds us in Psalm 23:5 of His provision and desire for us: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Jesus’ desire for His children is that we lean into Him for our provision. It is His word, His truth, His mercy, grace, and love that fills our cup. We must choose to sit at the feet of Jesus in order to receive what He desires to freely give, the very thing He died for.

Pray. Spend time with Him in the quiet. Talk to Him. Read His Word. Worship.

The next time we fill up our water bottles, may we remind ourselves that with Jesus, our cup can always be overflowing. Ask whether we’ve gone to Jesus to fill the cup of our heart and soul. Though I don’t want my water bottle to be overflowing, I certainly want that for my heart and soul. I want that for yours, too.
