Honoring Our Temple

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]? (1 Corinthians 6:19, AMP).

At the beginning of December I made the decision to start going to the gym regularly. One afternoon after work it hit me that I have zero excuses not to do a better job of keeping myself in shape. Additionally, I am going to “run” a 5k at the end of February as part of an FCA conference I’ll be attending in Orlando. This would be good motivation, too.

A month later, I found myself sitting in church thinking about what it means to honor our temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, says we are a temple for the Holy Spirit: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]?

Have you ever considered that your body is not your own? It’s a weird concept to grasp, and it opposes what society tells us. It’s only when we begin to view our bodies through the lens of it being “received as a gift from God”, as we are told in scripture, that we can flip the script.

I pulled out my phone during church, and jotted down a few notes.

Our body is a temple. We only get one. Learn how to love our bodies as a temple of the Holy Spirit. Protect our bodies so that we can work, give, and serve. Do these things in order to honor the Lord, and bring glory to God.

What are some ways you can intentionally honor your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

A few simple things that have been helpful for me: going to the grocery, the gym, and church. While it’s so easy to make excuses, I have found just how important these things are for me when it comes to honoring the temple of my body.

When I consider how I spend my time, money, etc. in light of the fact that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit it changes everything. There is an immediate shift when I begin to consider these choices from the perspective of honoring the Lord by caring for the temple of my body.

Faith fuels my fitness. Faith fuels my food choices. Faith fuels me filling a seat at church.

When I remind myself that followers of Jesus are called to be in the world, but not of the world, I can continue to be disciplined from a place of faith while honoring the temple of the Holy Spirit.
