No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open (Luke 8:16-17, NIV).
As I’ve been having fun, dream-filled conversations with a friend lately about where we will live, where we want to travel, what our families will look like, etc. Though I have no immediate plans to move, I’ve uncovered several things that I desire in my next home.
More than one bathroom. Laundry on the first floor. No known water issues, specifically with the basement. And maybe most importantly, more light.
Ironically enough, the apartment I lived in before I bought my home was even more void of light. The space itself had few windows, it was an old building with dim lighting, and it felt a bit spiritually dark as well.
When we learn to live in the darkness of our physical environment, I think it’s easy to allow ourselves to live in the darkness spiritually as well. We can be convinced to keep things hidden in the dark that God wants us to bring into the light.
That showed up recently when I was struggling with a particular thought pattern that I knew was filled with a lie from the enemy. I heard a voice that said, “You can’t share that with her. She will judge you.” I recognized that voice as a lie from the enemy, so I immediately called my friend.
Luke 8:16-17 reminds us of God’s truth regarding this: “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.”
I am learning what it means to bring our sins into the light as Jesus calls us to do. We must recognize the voice of the enemy. We must have courage. We must surround ourselves with followers of Jesus that will listen, and love without judgment.
What are you keeping hidden in the dark that God is calling you to bring into the light?
Whatever it is, in the darkness is exactly where the enemy wants to keep us. But as we are reminded in scripture, God’s desire is for us to recognize the lie, and bring it to the light where He can expose the truth.
The next time you find yourself in physical darkness, take a few moments to ask Jesus what things you’re keeping hidden in your heart. Ask Him to show you how to safely bring them into the light. He will show you the path to take.
