Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last (Mark 15:37, NLT).
Whether you’ve walked in a relationship with Jesus for most of your life, have just recently heard the Good News, or are totally unfamiliar with the name of Jesus I would like to encourage you today to spend some time reading about the events of Holy Week.
In the world of Christianity, Holy Week begins on the Sunday before Easter when Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey. Start in Chapter 11 of the Gospel of Mark. From there you can read about the events of His arrival, arrest, death and ultimately, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Good Friday specifically represents a day of mourning, prayer, fasting, and/or worship as a way to commemorate Jesus’ death on the cross. Mark 15:37 says: Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.
Let’s meditate on this single verse today. Commit it to memory. Pause and put yourself in the place of Jesus’ disciples. Allow yourself to imagine the depth of grief they must have felt. Reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made to save all of us, from all of our sins, for all time.
And then be encouraged. Sunday is coming. Jesus rose from the dead. Death did not have the final say. It still doesn’t and it never will. Thanks be to God!
If you’ve found yourself walking in a season of “death” or darkness, may you be reminded on this good, Good Friday that we serve a good, good Father who sent his only son to die on a cross so that we might be saved. I can’t think of better news than that.
