Joyful Noise

I enjoy music, but I have some friends who absolutely love it! They can’t go a day without hearing, singing, or serenading someone. Ha!

I love how we develop such an emotional connection with voices, music, and songs. There have been many moments where I’ve heard a song, or a voice that immediately takes me back in time.

The song Strawberry Wine by Deanna Carter transports me to middle school.

The album Confessions, by Usher, will always remind me of my senior year of high school.

The sound of Mother Angelica’s voice on EWTN immediately reminds me of my Mammaw Delaney and all the hours spent at her house.

The song Every Light in the House by Trace Adkins makes me think of my friend Lauren, and then I laugh out loud.

Take a moment to write down a few examples of your own. It’s actually been a really fun exercise that has transported me down memory lane!

Though he is known by many for his story of defeating the giant, Goliath, King David was a psalmist who expressed many of his emotions through song. Sometimes memories with music can bring joy, but other times it stirs up grief, sadness, or memories of what might have been.

Regardless, music is much more than a trip down memory lane. It was created and intended as a form of worship. There is an entire book of the Bible, Psalms, that expresses worship.

Psalm 95, verses 1 and 2 says: Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

I could spend hours sifting through the Psalms to present examples of how words can become worship. When we choose to sing out, with joyful noise unto the Lord, we can harness music for its created intention, which is to cry out to the Lord.

Find thirty minutes over the next week to spend some time flipping through the pages of Psalms. Sing, or speak, out to the Lord whatever is on your heart. I am prayerful, and confident, that the Lord will lead you exactly where you need to land.
