Pricing Gun

But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me (John 15:26, ESV).

I was casually scrolling through Facebook marketplace, and someone had a pricing gun listed. Immediately, I thought about couples walking through their favorite stores and using something similar to select items for their wedding registry. There are lots of things I am looking forward to with my future husband, but that is one I can’t wait for. The thought of strolling around our favorite places with a registry gun sounds like so much fun!

I’ve always been a frugal shopper. I don’t typically buy things unless I need them, and when I do get the urge to splurge, I try to make sure I’m getting a good deal. As I was imagining walking around stores like Macy’s, Williams-Sonoma, and others,I laughed thinking about my brother always giving me a hard time for being indecisive.

Being slow to make a decision can be a blessing and a curse. When it comes to making a decision about something like picking out a TV, I have been known to be slow to make a choice. On the other hand, when it comes to leaning into the Holy Spirit for dating decisions, I firmly believe the Lord has guided my decision-making to protect me from a lot of hurt.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a spiritual pricing gun? As I sat there, I imagined how helpful it would be if I could pull out my “spiritual pricing gun” before making a choice, scan the decision, and see how much it would actually cost me in the long run. Of course, I am not talking dollars and cents, but in terms of the condition of my heart and soul.

You’re being peer pressured into taking a drink. A guy is trying to talk you into going home with him after the party. Your boss is asking you to falsely verify some documents for a client. The “popular crowd” at school invites you to a private house party. You find yourself amongst a group of friends who are gossiping about others.

How much will it cost you?

There isn’t a physical item in this world like a pricing gun that will show us the cost of a decision, but as followers of Jesus, we must remember His words from John 15:26: “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”

The Holy Spirit, described as the Spirit of truth, is our pricing gun, sent to us from the Father. This truth is a great reminder that when the Holy Spirit lives within us, we are already equipped with a spiritual truth-teller that we have access to all the time. What an amazing gift!

The challenge for all of us today, and every day, is to work toward quieting our minds, hearts, and souls long enough to lean into the truth that is revealed to us through the Holy Spirit when we ask the Lord to show us the way. Though we will not know with 100% certainty that our decision is the right one, because that wouldn’t require any faith, we can lean into the nudging of the Holy Spirit to be our spiritual pricing gun. He will guide us and walk with us every step.
