Programmed to Lie

Updated: Nov 30, 2024

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning–the sixth day (1 Genesis 31, NIV).

I was driving back from an out of town trip recently when I asked Siri to look up something for me. Joking, I said back, “Siri, I don’t believe you.” Immediately, the response was, “I’m not programmed to lie.”

Wow! That response hit me in a Holy Spirit kind of way. Because guess what? We weren’t programmed to lie, either.

Clearly I don’t believe we are a result of programming. Biblical truth from Genesis 1:27 tells us that every one of us is a creation from the God of the Universe: So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

1 Genesis 31 reminds us that God created everything, and he called it good: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning–the sixth day.” Just as Siri was not programmed to lie, sin was never part of God’s plan.

Unfortunately, there was a “glitch in the system” that occurred in the Garden of Eden when the devil tempted Eve, and sin entered into the world.

We were not created to steal, speak unkind thoughts, watch pornography, have sex before marriage, commit adultery, and the list goes on. But because of the fall, we are all subject to these “bugs”, as they are called in the technology world, that impact the way we function.

Shame keeps us from walking in truth. Guilt keeps us bound to the past that Jesus wants to free us from. Unforgiveness keeps us imprisoned to the actions of others.

With technology, no matter how many updates are run, there are always going to be issues with the system that require attention. The same is true of our hearts. We cannot escape sin, but we can submit our hearts to frequent care that helps walk more closely in step with the Spirit.

Begin your day spending a few quiet moments with Jesus. Worship with music on your car ride to and from work, or school. Have a God honoring conversation with a friend. End your day with prayer.

Siri was not programmed to lie, and we were not created to walk in opposition to the love of Christ. Glitches in the system, our hearts, will always exist as part of our brokenness. Just as we have to update our smartphones to ensure they run properly, may we choose to be intentional to run daily updates on our hearts.
