RollerCoaster of Life

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you (Genesis 12:1, NIV).
I still remember the first roller coaster I ever rode–Chang at Kentucky Kingdom! Though it is no longer there, I will never forget its bright yellow color, intimidating heights, and distinctive curves that made it stand out among the rest.
We were visiting the theme park for a school field trip, and my twin brother talked me into riding it with him. Though I was very apprehensive, I have always trusted David with such ease.
Though my body doesn’t do well with roller coasters anymore, they used to give me such a thrill, which began that day when I decided to hop on the ride with him and conquer a fear.
Is there a fear that is keeping you from God’s best?
Maybe it’s fear of walking away from a job when you know God is calling you somewhere else.
Maybe it’s fear of putting yourself out there in the dating world so that you’ll meet someone new.
Maybe it’s fear of failure, or fear that you’re not enough.
Life is a roller coaster sometimes. It takes a lot of courage to move toward the fear, and step into whatever God is calling you toward. But it is necessary if we want to walk the path that Jesus has planned for us.
When God called Abraham, I’m betting that looked a lot like conquering a fear. Genesis 12:1 says: The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”
Sometimes it looks like leaving your home and following where God leads you.
Sometimes it looks like not letting a fear of failure keep you from stepping into that new venture.
Sometimes it looks like feeling afraid, but doing it anyway.
I will never forget that first experience on Chang. The slow ascent to the first big drop was terrifying, but I chose to get on the ride anyway. I held on tight, leaning into my brother, whom I trusted completely. I am so grateful for the experience of that day.
When we choose to trust in Jesus, He promises to walk with us on whatever path He has planned for our lives. Pushing past the fear is worth it, because the path He has planned for our lives is far greater than anything we can ever imagine for ourselves.
Be brave. Trust Jesus, and get on the ride with Him.
