For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16, NIV).
I recently watched the movie, “The Mother”, with some friends. It was a bit more blood and gore than I was expecting, but I really loved the movie as a whole.
The Mother, played by Jennifer Lopez, gets involved with some incredibly dangerous drug dealers, ends up pregnant, and has to put her daughter in the care of the foster system.
As the movie progresses, it becomes evident that the daughter’s life is in grave danger as a pawn in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
In an effort not to spoil major details for anyone who hasn’t watched but would like to, I will just say this: Jennifer Lopez’s character, known simply as The Mother, has one primary motive throughout the movie–to protect her daughter at all costs, even to the point of her own death.
I immediately thought about Jesus and the cross. The Father. Though it’s impossible to understand the magnitude, depth, and intensity of God’s love for His children, the display of protection in the movie was a punch to the gut in the best way possible.
John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
The love depicted in this movie is but a glimpse of God’s love for me. When the daughter ran to The Mother, I found myself in tears as I thought about what it means to run to Jesus.
Even when I didn’t know Him, everything that has happened in my life has been held in the hands of my Father. When I begin to view my life through the lens of God’s love and protection, it changes everything.
When the relationship didn’t work out. When the clinical rotation got canceled. When that friendship was severed.
Maybe you’re not sure about this Jesus thing. Maybe you’re in a place in life where things don’t make sense, and you can’t seem to find God anywhere.
May we all remember and lean into the love of the Father, and simply run to Jesus. I promise you He is there, waiting with outstretched arms for His children to come to Him.
It will be the best thing you’ve done.
