And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (Genesis 1:3, NIV).
Another beach story. On a recent trip I decided I wanted to capture a sunrise progression in photos. Watching the sun slowly rise above the clouds always leaves me in awe of God.
As I began snapping the series of photos, I was able to look at the sun. However, as it rose above the clouds, I was unable to look directly at the sun because of its brightness. I continued with my project until completion, but had to look at my phone in order to capture the image.
One of my favorite characters of God is his omnipotence, which means having unlimited power. As described on one website:
“Omnipotence refers to God’s all-powerful character. To say that God is omnipotent is to recognize that there is nothing outside of His ability to accomplish and no one who can exercise power over Him. God created the entire universe, and He holds the power over it all.1
Genesis 1:1-3 says: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
When I read this section of scripture I am reminded of God’s omnipotence. He created everything out of nothing. There was darkness before He created the light, but because He saw that the light was good He separated it from the darkness.
Can you imagine what it would have been like to see the sun “rise” for the very first time when God created the first day? Hard to even imagine the glory, the beauty, and the power. The light is so bright that we cannot even look directly towards the sun.
The power and glory of the Lord is so overwhelming that even Moses was unable to see the face of God. I am reminded of this when I stand in front of the brightness of the sun as nighttime gives way to light and becomes the day.
Sunrise every morning. Sunset every evening. Darkness to light. Light to darkness.
Maybe today you find yourself in a situation where you feel powerless. Maybe you feel surrounded by darkness, and you can’t seem to find any light. If you cannot bring yourself to do anything else, just look up, and look around.
We are surrounded by the power of God through nature. And when we look up, we remember that we cannot, but He can.
