The Right Fit

If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me (Jeremiah 29:13, NLT).
I don’t cook very often. It’s not that I can’t, but rather, it’s just not a time investment I choose to make regularly. I should also mention that I’m spoiled with very good friends who share their delicious food with me! That being said, I do make sure to keep a good collection of Pyrex bowls on hand at home. They’re an excellent multi-purpose kitchen item!
One evening, I used a Pyrex bowl to mix up a side dish for supper. I ate and came back thirty minutes later to put everything away. I reached into the cabinet to pull out the top for the bowl to store the leftovers, and the first top I pulled out didn’t fit. Classic. I tried a second top and still no luck. Finally, after the fourth try, I found the top that was just the right fit.
As I placed the bowl in the fridge, the Lord reminded me that life is often like trying to find the right size top for a Pyrex bowl. Sometimes it takes more tries than we’d like, but if we persist, we’ll eventually find the right fit! Is there something in your life where you’ve been trying to find the right fit, and nothing seems to work out as you hoped?
Maybe you’re trying to find the right job. Maybe you’re trying to find someone you trust to watch your kids. Maybe you’re looking for the perfect pair of shoes. Maybe you’re on the hunt for your family’s forever home.
When we apply the principle found in Jeremiah 29:13, I truly believe it will change our approach to seeking: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
When we’re seeking the right fit, many things can get in the way. Sometimes it seems we’re so close, but then inevitably, something falls apart, and we end up right back where we started. I’ve learned a lot on my journey with Jesus over the last six years, and one thing I’ve discovered is the importance of frequently assessing the status of my heart. I’ve learned to ask myself if something is “God’s right fit for me.”
That’s why I love Jeremiah 29:13 so much. In this life, many things compete for our attention and focus. Society screams certain expectations, and social media pressures us into believing there’s a “perfect fit” for everything. Even well-intentioned friends and family make us feel like we’re missing something that’s right in front of us.
I want to encourage you today to take your seeking heart to the Lord. Just like finding the right top for the Pyrex bowl, it may take several tries to find what you’re searching for. But if you place the desires of your heart at the feet of Jesus and elevate the importance of seeking Him above whatever “right fit” you’re looking for, I can guarantee you the Lord will exceed your expectations.
