The Vastness of God

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds (Psalm 36:5, NLT).

I love walking along the beach. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the beautiful sun beaming warmth on my skin, the squish of the sand between my toes. I love it all! It brings such a sense of peace to my soul. I had the opportunity to spend a week at the beach with friends a short while ago. It brought rest and restoration in a much needed way.

I woke up early every morning on vacation, but I didn’t mind that at all. Each morning I would start a pot of coffee, get myself dressed and make the short 3 minute walk down to the beach with my coffee in hand.

Though I love all of the things I previously mentioned, my favorite thing is how small I feel when walking along the sandy shore while the waves gently crash under my feet. It is a reminder of how vast God’s love is for His children.

Psalm 36:5 says, Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. The vastness of the ocean. The depths of the Grand Canyon. The heights of Mount Everest. The brightness of the sun that provides light to all the Earth. The intricacies of the starts in the sky that guided the shepherds to baby Jesus. In my life, there isn’t much that reminds me of the vastness of God’s love more than the times when I pause to look and go outside.

What’s your favorite place to go when you need to hit pause, reset and find space to connect with Jesus?

Lots of people love the beach. Others would choose a secluded cabin in the woods, or maybe even a European vacation where they take in all the sights while sipping on locally made tea. Maybe it’s a simple as stepping out onto your front porch or back patio to look up at the stars in the sky.

I would like to challenge you this week. Find time to spend at least ten minutes, more if you can, outside in nature. Go for a walk. Step onto your porch and look up at the stars. If you’re fortunate enough to be at the beach, sit on the sandy shore and listen to the waves crashing. Get quiet in the woods.

Whatever it looks like for you, be intentional to pause and spend time with Jesus in a space where you can be reminded of the vastness of His love for you.

It is impossible to imagine the true height, depth, width and breadth of God’s love for us, but I am believing this intentional time might just give your heart a glimpse of that love. It may be just what you need to strengthen you as you walk along the path of God’s plan for your life.
