The Weeds of Life

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well (Psalm 139: 13-14, NIV).

I am notorious for letting the weeds in my flower bed get out of control. Every single day, for over a month, I walked into and out of my house while I watched the weeds continue to grow. The look of it drove me crazy.

But still, that wasn’t enough to get me motivated to get out there and address the issue. I wasn’t willing to commit the time and physical effort it would require. Instead, I chose to continually ignore the problem.

Thankfully, about a month ago a friend of mine came to help me get some yard work done. The help was the motivation I needed.

Together we pulled weeds, swept and cleaned up the back patio, and used the weed eater in all the needed areas. After about an hour and a half of work, everything looked so much better! Most importantly, I felt physically lighter because the mess was cleaned up.

How often is that true about the condition of our hearts and souls, too?

The weeds of life are wounds that we know are there, yet continue to ignore. We walk the daily routine of our lives as the weeds continue to grow up around us. If we aren’t careful, just like the weeds in my flower bed, the wounds we ignore soon become so many that they overtake the beauty of the heart God created.

Psalm 139, 13-14 tells us of God’s specific, intentional design: For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

This scripture reminds me to lean into the beauty of how God created me, and how He created you. His design was perfect. We are beautiful. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Because of the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, sin was introduced into the world. That sin is what allows weeds to grow in the garden of our lives. It’s what threatens to overtake the beauty and the good of God’s design.

Thinking back to the weeds in my flower bed, I could have chosen to take on the project alone. Instead, a friend joined me to conquer the task together. When it comes to caring for our heart and soul, we must not go alone.

Seek wisdom from the Lord through the Word. Surround yourself with trusted friends and mentors. Schedule a counseling appointment to begin acknowledging the weeds of life that wounds threatening to steal from you the life God has planned for you.

When you choose to walk with Jesus, I truly believe you’ll feel burdens lifted as you walk forward into all the beautiful things God has planned for your life.
