Wardrobe Change

Colossians 3:10 (MSG) says: “Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.”

Spring brings a lot of things—the time changes, we experience drastic temperature swings, and allergies wreak havoc on so many of us. It almost always brings spring cleaning, too! One Saturday several weeks back I spent the majority of the day rummaging through my clothes, jewelry, and linen closet with the intent of getting rid of things I hadn’t used or worn over the last couple of years.

Like most people, I tend to spend the most time on clothes. I wouldn’t consider myself a shopper, but I’m still amazed at how much can accumulate over the course of several years. As I was sorting things into separate piles, I found myself thinking about my wardrobe. What does it say about me?

After some thought, I landed on describing my wardrobe, and myself, in this way: I’m a sporty chic who loves her sweats and a ball cap, but I can still dress for success when I’m headed out to church, a date, or an event. Casual comfort meets professionally pretty.

As I continued to process, my mind was drawn to a verse from Colossians 3:10. I think the MSG version fits perfectly here: Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.

I love this translation. As I was cleaning out my closet, I found myself thinking: Who wouldn’t love to have a brand new wardrobe with custom-made outfits? The truth of the matter, spiritually speaking, is that we all have the opportunity to make a wardrobe change in our lives.

This verse speaks to more than outward, physical appearance. It serves as a great reminder for me to “check my wardrobe”, so to speak. Have I been kind to myself and others? Have I made good choices when it comes to taking care of my body? Have I honored my Mother and Father? Am I allowing the thoughts and judgments of others to define me?

As I finished my closet clean out that day, I took some extra time to ask myself what my “wardrobe” says about me. When others look at my outward appearance, my prayer is always that they see someone with a heart that is always chasing after Jesus. There are many imperfections, but when I remember that my life is labeled and defined by my Creator, I can walk confidently in my wardrobe, despite any judgments others may make.

If you find yourself doing any spring cleaning in the coming weeks, I’d like to encourage you to think about your wardrobe, physically and spiritually. When you step into a personal relationship with Jesus, you will begin to experience a wardrobe change like never before. It may take some getting used to at first, but I can promise you it will be the best decision you’ve ever made.
