Wardrobe Change, Part II

Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete (Colossians 3:10, MSG).

A couple of summers ago, I decided to try Stitch Fix. After clicking through a questionnaire to help the app learn my style, I signed up to receive a box of 5 items (clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc.) that are selected by a personal stylist based on how I answered the questions. I loved the process! The anticipation, and the opening of the box to discover my new items was like Christmas morning.

After buying new items from Stitch Fix, I forced myself to go through my closet. I try to do this every year or two because it reminds me of what I do have so that I don’t buy things I don’t need. It also helps me keep my closet from overflowing with items that I never wear.

It’s always funny to take note of how fashion changes, even over the course of just a couple of years. It never fails that I find an item of clothing that was once very fashionable, but is now very much out-of-style.

Though I am intentional to sort through my closet of clothes and shoes regularly, am I intentional about assessing my spiritual wardrobe? Since stepping into a personal relationship with Christ a number of years ago, I began to slowly change my wardrobe of character.

What do people see when they look at my life and how do I make them feel? Do I carefully consider my words and their impact on others? Am I choosing to love others, even when it’s difficult? Is my life marked by joy and peace, rather than chaos and confusion?

Colossians 3:10 (MSG) says: “Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. I love this translation. Who wouldn’t love to have a brand new wardrobe with custom-made outfits? Here’s the good news—we all can, and it won’t cost you a single cent.

Saying yes to a personal relationship with Christ marks the beginning of a change, from the inside out, whereby we begin to transition away from allowing fleshly desires to guide our life and instead begin to walk in step with the Holy Spirit.

Our new wardrobe should consist of the fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

When I used Stitch Fix they provided a personal stylist who did a great job picking out items that I would love! As good as they were, Jesus is so much better. Though it won’t always be easy, we have a good, good Father who is the ultimate stylist.

When it comes to helping us outfit our character in a way that represents Jesus, we must lean into Him, let Him help us make a wardrobe change, and I can promise you, it will be the best you’ve ever looked!
