Weary Traveler

Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land (Proverbs 25:25, NIV).

Being an aunt to ten nieces and nephews is one of the greatest joys of my life. So much so that I will often choose to spend my free time, extra money, paid time off, etc., with or directly on them. My love for them runs deep. I can’t imagine the depth of love a parent has for their children, much less the depth of love Jesus has for you and me.

Over the recent New Year holiday weekend, I volunteered to help my mom watch three of these blessings: ages 6 months, 5 years, and almost 7. They are wonderful kids and so well-behaved. But, as any of you who have or are often around kids know, they demand a lot of attention. We put together puzzles, played games, circled countless hidden objects, changed diapers, made bottles, picked up toys, put down for naps, and carried around, on repeat, for several days in a row.

Three days and two long nights later, I returned to the quiet of my home. A hot shower and a nap were calling my name—both luxuries that most parents of young kids would die for. After a phone call that my brother and sister-in-law’s flight had been canceled, I hopped back in the car to drive another hour back to help my mom for one more night.

I called a friend during the drive. Knowing I was feeling pretty tired (and maybe a little grumpy), she suggested I listen to some worship music to reposition my heart. She laughed at my apathetic response, but we both knew she was right. It is usually when we need to pray and worship that we feel least like doing so. As I approached the house, nearing the end of my hour drive, I turned up the radio to hear these lyrics from the song “Weary Traveler” by Jordan St. Cyr:

You keep on givin’ But every day this world just keeps on takin’ Your tired heart is on the edge of breaking Carry on

Weary traveler, restless soul You were never meant to walk this road alone It’ll all be worth it so just hold on Weary traveler, you won’t be weary long

I love worship music. The words landed on my heart with perfect timing and reminded me that no matter how worn out and weary we may feel, we are never alone. The best news of all is that when we choose to place our hope and faith in Jesus, we won’t be weary long.

Many of you are carrying burdens and fighting battles, and each day you’re just trying to put one foot in front of the other. As followers of Jesus, because this world is not our home, we all are weary travelers. Proverbs 25:25 (NIV) says: Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land. The best news of all is that when we profess with our mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord, we are saved by faith through grace from all of our sins for all of eternity. It is a free gift to our weary souls, and it restores our once broken relationship with God.

That truth, if we allow it to sink into our hearts, will always be enough to help us hold on.
